“I believe the next generation is becoming more open and inclusive to all beings, but it’s a long and slow transition. We’re having to reprogram.”

Georgia Palmer is the Birmingham-born model and all-round creative that has been gracing the fashion industry with her fierce looks since starting her modelling career aged 15. Now in her early twenties, she’s fast becoming a fashion powerhouse and has recently been the face of several international campaigns, including one for Calvin Klein and Italian luxury streetwear label Palm Angels,. Here we see her wearing the brand-new More Or Less capsule collection with Aries Arise, featuring upcycled archive pieces and leftover fabrics.
Her sculpted features and cropped curls give Georgia a boldly androgynous air that makes her stand out in any crowd. Her take on life is as refreshing as her aesthetic. Upon moving to London at the start of her career, Georgia says she was lucky to have been accepted into a “beautiful, ethereal, black queer community that celebrates expression and openness”. Living this way has helped her come to terms with her uniqueness and explore her identity outside of the labels imposed by society.
The multi-faceted model, actress, DJ and dancer spoke as part of Vivienne Westwood’s spring/summer 2021 Voices campaign where she recounted how growing up “in a predominantly white area” affected her self-confidence. She’s since made it her business to challenge conventional modes of beauty and draws inspiration from London’s vibrant queer rave scene (among other things) for her personal sense of style, which ranges from leather-heavy gothic-chic ensembles to cute and colourful preppy pieces.
Georgia believes the shift towards sustainability in fashion, as with all impactful social movements, starts with collective action; she is often spotted wearing reworked vintage garments, such as a gorgeous structured bodice made from an upcycled Hull City FC shirt. She also reduces her consumption of fast fashion by swapping and sharing clothes among the other 16 creatives with whom she shares a warehouse living space.
During the lockdown of last year, Georgia and her friends mobilised towards racial equality by joining the Black Lives Matter protests that were held in the capital. In an interview with Nike that she gave along with her brother and fellow model Joel Palmer, she admits that it wasn’t until the resurgence of the BLM movement last year that she was “faced with learning” about black history. This has led her to an eye-opening journey of working to “understand what [her] position in society is as a black woman” and some “uncomfortable conversations with family and friends”.
Priding herself in her versatility both in work and in life, she takes this all in her stride with a stunning grace.
Who is Georgia Palmer outside of modelling?
Outside of modelling I’m usually spending time with my cats and my partner. I love meeting up with friends, dancing, DJing. I manage my photography studio, Sibling Studios. If not all of the above, just chilling and getting into a good series.
What were your early experiences of modelling like? Do you have any regrets about starting work at such a young age?
They were exciting of course, but scary. I have no regrets. Modelling at a young age has taught me a whole lot of independence and has helped me grow mentally. It was hard to come out of my shell at first but I’m glad I did.
What do you think is holding the modelling industry back from becoming more diverse and genuinely inclusive?
I think the industry – and more so the world, in fact – has been socially conditioned to a beauty standard. Some people are unable to see beauty outside of their own bubble, therefore would exclude any usage of people outside of their comfort zone. I believe the next generation is becoming more open and inclusive to all beings, but it’s a long and slow transition. We’re having to reprogram.
What are some of your favourite campaigns you’ve worked on so far and why?
Personally, my best campaigns were the ones that provided an exciting experience where I’ve been able to travel to a country and learn different ways of life. It’s also a blessing to work with a team and establish actual friendships from them, and these are the moments I appreciate and remember. As for my favourite campaigns, I would say Numéro Netherlands as I have found amazing friendships here, Vogue Arabia as I had the blessing of going to Morocco and experiencing the culture and of course Vogue Italia cover as David Sims has been my hero.
As a multi-faceted creative, how do you balance all your different interests?
I can’t lie, I don’t believe my life is totally balanced, I just live in the moment and take each day as it comes.
Over the pandemic have you learned anything new about yourself? If so, what?
I’ve learnt how to slow down, practise self-care to the fullest and to not take life for granted. Always give love, be kind and educate yourself.
